The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party was reported to remain in crisis as loyalists rejected claims by the party’s National Vice Chairman, South-South, Dan Orbih, that former Governor Godwin Obaseki had “destroyed” the state party.
According to The Punch, Orbih made the remarks on Sunday during a factional congress that elected Nosa Ogieva as chairman, just weeks after another faction loyal to Obaseki held its own congress on September 27, producing Tony Aziegbemi as chairman.
Obaseki was said to have joined the PDP in 2020 after the All Progressives Congress denied him a second-term ticket following a long-standing dispute with a faction loyal to former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
Orbih alleged that Obaseki’s actions had caused serious divisions within the Edo PDP, saying the former governor had sown deep discord and destroyed the unity that once held the party together. He accused Obaseki of fighting everyone except himself and blamed him for the party’s weakened political position in the state.
He further dismissed a statement issued by the rival faction, urging members to disregard the congress.
He also said, “Just yesterday, I saw a statement issued by some funny characters advising party members not to attend this congress. Those who don’t have any moral authority to speak on behalf of the party should remain silent.”
Orbih alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party was currently facing a leadership crisis both at the national level and across several states, adding that many founding members were leaving daily due to what he described as failed leadership. He claimed the party had been united until Governor Godwin Obaseki joined.
He further described the rival faction as “undertakers” who were allegedly praying for the party’s collapse before moving to the African Democratic Congress. See, More, Here>>>
