The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defied Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, by appointing a caretaker committee to oversee its South-South operations, according to The PUNCH reports. This move follows the expiration of the zonal executive’s tenure on March 9, 2025.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) emphasized the need to prevent a leadership vacuum. The committee, chaired by Emma Ogidi, will oversee the zone’s activities for three months or until a new executive is elected.

The leadership tussle intensified after the Rivers State High Court restrained the PDP and its South-South National Vice Chairman, Dan Orbih, from conducting a zonal congress. Despite this ruling, the party proceeded with the congress in Calabar, where Orbih won with 174 votes. Wike, who backed the congress, insisted that it was legally organized and affirmed Orbih’s position.

However, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, disregarded Wike’s position and appointed a caretaker committee. Emma Ogidi was named chairman, with Damiete Herbert-Miller as secretary. Other members include Nicholas Ayuwa, Godwin Akpan Udonta, Bekewei Ashanti, Idehen Ebomoyim, and Dame Vivian Ahanmisi.
