Tears and outrage have followed the killing of 14-year-old Kehinde Paul Alade who was shot dead during an altercation involving the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) and police officers in Ibadan.
Kehinde who was on his way to write an exam, cried out to his father, “Dad, they’ve shot me,” moments before he collapsed in the vehicle.
A family friend and church member, Fajobi Olumide, paid a touching tribute to the boy, describing him as a humble and gifted church drummer. “He played the drum set during last Sunday’s church service.
Just last Saturday, he came with his father to our house for an event,” Olumide said. “I gave him a sachet of water because he was too shy to ask. I didn’t know that would be the last time I would see him.”
The incident occurred when Kehinde’s father, Mr. Odunayo Alade, tried to avoid an OYRTMA official by reversing his vehicle. According to eyewitnesses, including a neighbour in the car, the officers were aware there were children inside. Despite this, the situation escalated, and a gunshot rang out unexpectedly.
“We didn’t know there were policemen carrying guns. Suddenly, we heard a shot. Paul screamed, ‘They’ve shot me!’” said Mrs. Peter Funmilayo, who was in the vehicle.
Kehinde was rushed to Welfare Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
