Colonel Olayinka Olayanju (rtd), the Commandant of Amotekun in Oyo State, said that the current number of officers and the weapons they carry are not enough to protect the entire state.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Edmund Obilo, Col Olayanju said that Oyo State is as large as Belgium and even bigger than the whole Southeast region made up of five states. He said Amotekun only has about 2,500 officers and their weapons are mainly pump-action guns, which have limited range and power. He called for more attention to be given to their needs so that they can do their job effectively and keep people safe. He said without proper weapons and more trained officers, it is very difficult for Amotekun to fully secure the state.
In Olayanju’s words: “The entire Oyo State is the size of Belgium, Oyo State is more than the entire Southeastern region, the 5 states. What can 2500 people do? And look at the challenges, we are not armed appropriately. What are we carrying? Pump action gun and what is the range? What are the bandits carrying and what is the range?
