Residents of Oworonshoki in Lagos have accused their traditional ruler, Oba Saliu of selling community land without offering them any form of compensation.
The aggrieved residents made the revelation during an interview with News Central TV from 4:59, expressing frustration over what they described as a betrayal of trust by the monarch.
Speaking on behalf of the affected families, one of the residents said the community was shocked to hear claims that they had received compensation. “We didn’t collect any money; Oba Saliu sold our land. He said we collected money, but we didn’t collect any money from him,” one of the residents lamented.
According to them, the land in question, which was originally allocated for communal use, has now been taken over by private developers who began construction without consulting the locals. The residents alleged that their protests have been ignored and that attempts to seek redress through local authorities have yielded no results.
Community elders also stated that the land had historical significance and was meant to serve as a heritage site and farmland for future generations. “This is not just about land; it’s about our identity and survival,” another resident said.
The situation has reportedly created tension within the community, as many residents have vowed not to vacate the land until justice is served. They are calling on the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to intervene and investigate the matter.
Efforts to reach Oba Saliu or his representatives for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, residents say they will continue to demand accountability, insisting that their rights and heritage must not be sold off without consent or compensation. View, More,
