Executive Director of The Kukah Centre, Fr. Atta Barkindo has expressed deep sorrow over the brutal attack on worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, describing the incident as one of the most tragic acts of violence against innocent citizens in recent Nigerian history.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News from 2:27, Fr. Barkindo lamented the senseless killing of worshippers who had gathered in peace to observe their Sunday service. “They were having service, and it’s so sad that they had to enter this church and massacre these people that have died and been killed,” he said.

The priest, who is a prominent voice in peacebuilding and interfaith dialogue, condemned the attack as an affront to humanity and a violation of sacred spaces meant for worship and reflection. He said the massacre underscored the urgent need for Nigeria to strengthen its internal security architecture and intelligence operations to prevent future occurrences.

Fr. Barkindo also emphasized that religious leaders must play a key role in rebuilding trust and unity among communities affected by violence. He noted that such attacks not only inflict physical pain but also deepen social divisions and breed fear among citizens.

He urged both federal and state authorities to ensure that those responsible for the Owo killings are brought to justice, stressing that accountability is crucial to restoring faith in Nigeria’s justice system.
