Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is being disconnected from the daily struggles facing ordinary Nigerians, blaming presidential advisers for shielding him from harsh realities.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV, Ndume painted a bleak picture of public sentiment toward the current administration. “The people are not happy. Several people have said it, and the President also is not pretending. He acknowledged that there’s hardship; he’s acknowledged that things are very difficult, and even recently, he appealed that people should be patient with him,” Ndume stated.
However, the senator questioned the sustainability of public patience amid continuing economic challenges. “But the question is, how long will they be patient? And things are very difficult, and certainly, so many things have not been done the way the people are expecting. And to be honest with you, if you can go back to the electorate today, half of them are not happy. You can’t say they are; you can’t lie about that,” he declared.
The senator criticized what he described as a culture of deception surrounding the president, arguing that advisers are providing misleading information rather than honest assessments. “I see people lying, and I see people telling the President what he wants to hear, or maybe some of them even he doesn’t want to hear them. My position on the people around the President that are supposed to help him is that they are deceiving him and are doing more harm than good,” the senator stated bluntly.
Ndume explained why he believes President Tinubu cannot accurately know the public sentiment, citing the isolation inherent in his position. “Let me say that because the President cannot go out on the street like myself and know how the people feel. Even outside the Villa they will drive him in tinted glass, he doesn’t even see what’s going on,” he said.
The senator emphasized the crucial role that elected representatives should play in providing accurate information to the presidency. He offered a comprehensive assessment of the country’s current state while acknowledging both policy failures and external factors.Ndume argued that Nigerians would be more understanding if they received honest communication about the nation’s challenges.
