Hundreds of protesters on Saturday booed former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, in Owerri, the Imo State capital, over his decision to host former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, in the state.

According to The Nation, both opposition leaders were in Owerri to take part in the Odenigbo Lecture Series organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri.

El-Rufai arrived in Imo State on Friday and was welcomed by the traditional ruler of Nekede Ancient Kingdom, Eze Agumanu. While his visit to Nekede did not cause any disagreements, his presence at a Christian event alongside Obi upset some members of the community.

The protesters, which included men, women, and young people, sang war songs and criticized Obi for what they called bringing an enemy into Igboland.

They accused El-Rufai of being someone who openly dislikes the Igbo people and Christians. They claimed that during his eight years as governor of Kaduna, his leadership was marked by violence that led to the deaths of many innocent Christians.

Some of the protesters expressed disappointment that Peter Obi could associate himself with someone who openly hates Ndigbo and conspired against them in national politics.

They declared, “Our respect for Obi has evaporated today. By identifying with an enemy of Ndigbo, he has also made himself an enemy. Ndigbo will never take Obi seriously again after his open relationship with El-Rufai.”

Some leaders from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had previously raised concerns about a rally that the former governor of Kaduna State wanted to hold in the area.
