ASP Mary Onoja, a police officer, has spoken about how she was accused of adultery and forced to swear she did not do it.
In an interview from 8:50 with Brekete Family, a human rights programme, Onoja said her husband accused her of committing adultery and demanded she prove her innocence in his village.
Onoja said she was taken to the graves of her husband’s grandfather and other relatives and asked to swear that she never cheated on her husband. She said she did everything she was asked to do and she was declared innocent of the accusation, but her husband still refused to accept her.
In Onoja’s words: “They said can I swear to graves? I said whatever it is, let us do it if that is what will take me back to my children. They took me to the graves of my husband’s grandfather and some of his uncles and aunties. So one of my husband’s aunties said before I swear to the graves I should know the corpse that are lying in the graves. She stood on the graves and mentioned their names for me, after which they said I should swear by the graves if I have never slept with any man besides my husband.” Read_More…
