Kenneth Okonkwo, former spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign, has stated that the only way to stop President Bola Tinubu from completing eight years in office is to field a northern candidate, during an interview with Daily Independent on Friday, 25 July, 2025.
He said this is not just about politics but about saving Nigeria from worsening problems.
Okonkwo said if Tinubu had performed well, there would be no need to challenge him.
But according to him, the president has failed in key areas like the economy, security, and national unity.
He also criticized Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying it does not reflect Nigeria’s religious diversity.
He stated clearly that his call for a northern candidate is based on strategy, not sentiment.
He believes that a northern candidate would be able to gain the kind of support needed to defeat Tinubu, especially when facing a strong incumbent backed by power and resources.
Okonkwo said the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he now supports, plans to hold a free and fair primary election.
He made it clear that the party has not officially chosen a northern candidate.
However, he personally believes that bringing a strong figure from the North is the only realistic way to win.
He also said the ADC has agreed to support a one-term presidency if elected.
This, he said, would reassure Nigerians that power would rotate again soon, allowing all regions to feel included.
According to him, the 2027 election will be difficult, especially without reforms to ensure transparency.
That’s why he believes only a well-thought-out plan, like the one used in 2015 to defeat Goodluck Jonathan, can work now.
”If Tinubu had done well in all honesty I’ll go home and sleep. But you cannot choose a Muslim-Muslim ticket, the economy is running riot, insecurity is going everywhere and we want to give you eight years. The only way to make a disruptive change is to bring a Northerner and disrupt his regime and the ADC has agreed, it has to be four years. The ADC is clear that it would have a free and fair primary election, where everybody is free to contest. It’s not ADC saying it prefers a Northern candidate, it’s my own preference and strategy because that’s the only way to win Tinubu in the election,” he said.
