Dele Farotimi, a lawyer and human rights activist, has reacted to Peter Obi’s one-term presidency proposal, as reported by Daily Post on Monday, 18 August, 2025.
Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, recently said he would serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Farotimi noted that this was not the first time Obi had made such a promise.
He recalled that the former governor of Anambra State also made the same statement during the 2023 elections.
He explained that the matter should not be taken lightly but should be properly examined.
He said Nigerians should ask what Obi plans to achieve within just four years.
According to him, a vision for a country should go beyond a short period.
He stressed that if Obi has clear plans, then the number of years may not matter.
Farotimi argued that what matters is not how long a leader stays in office but what they do with the time.
He pointed to past leaders who spent many years in office without meaningful achievements.
He mentioned former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, who both completed two terms but left little impact.
He also criticised the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying it has already taken the country backward.
He explained that eight years in power without results means nothing.
He added that Nigerians should be more concerned about the quality of leadership rather than the duration.
“A man says he’s going to spend one term. One term to do what? I think we should ask that question.
Obasanjo had eight years; what did he do with them? Buhari had eight years; what did he do with it? He ruined Nigeria. Tinubu has had two years, he’s taking us back like 50 years,” he said.
