Dr. Bolaji Akinyemi, Convener of the Apostolic Roundtable and Chairman of Project Victory Call Initiative (PVC Naija), has dismissed suggestions that his call for President Bola Tinubu to serve only one term is a strategic push for Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition as reported by Independent Nigeria on July 20, 2025.
Speaking in an interview, Akinyemi responded to concerns that his stance was a tactical support for Obi, who has already pledged to run for only one term if elected. According to him, the urgency for Nigeria’s transformation should take precedence over political calculations or assumptions.
“Not at all. With less than two years left, time is already short. Transformational reforms need gestation, legislation, and implementation time. Waiting until campaign season will render meaningful change impossible. Now is the only window we have,” Akinyemi said.
He explained that his position stems from the need for the Tinubu administration to prioritize national development over political ambition. He emphasized that a second-term pursuit would likely distract from the real reforms Nigeria urgently requires.
On the matter of Peter Obi’s one-term declaration, Akinyemi believes it is more of a political strategy than a firm commitment to national interest.
“On Peter Obi, I think Obi is just being politically smart to convince the North to support him and be sure that power will return to the North in 2031. Beyond the surface commitment of Peter Obi for power are the critical needs of the country, which no President begging for vote will be able to implement. There is no need of playing politics with our future,” he added.
Akinyemi’s comments reflect a broader concern about the impact of re-election politics on meaningful governance and the urgency for sincere national reform.
