Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has explained how expensive it is to fund security in the country. Speaking in an interview with Channels Television from 3:18, Musa highlighted the high cost of military equipment and operations, stressing that people often underestimate what it takes to keep a country safe.
According to him, advanced technologies such as satellites would make security operations easier because they allow soldiers to see threats in real time and respond quickly. However, he noted that such tools are very expensive and not easy to acquire. “I wish we could have satellites… but these things are very costly,” he said.
Musa added that Nigeria is already making progress thanks to efforts from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Department of State Services (DSS), and National Intelligence Agency (NIA). Still, he stressed that funding remains a big challenge.
He gave clear examples of the costs: “One missile is about 100 thousand dollars, and you need to shoot with precision. You need to get drones, you need to get ships. One ship could take 10 tankers of fuel, and if it goes for five hours, it’s empty. Security is expensive.”
To put this in perspective, Musa compared Nigeria’s situation to the United States. He said America spent about $883 billion on its military in one year, and during the war in Afghanistan, nearly $1 billion was spent each day.
