According to Times of Israel, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared that there is still a narrow window for a hostage deal to avert a major ground offensive in Gaza, but once the operation begins, it will not stop until all objectives are achieved.
Katz made the remarks after meeting with senior military commanders, emphasizing that the upcoming campaign, dubbed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, is designed to defeat Hamas, secure the release of Israeli hostages, and ensure Israeli forces maintain control over any territory gained.
Katz stated that the operation would be launched only after U.S. President Donald Trump completes his regional visit, scheduled for May 13–16. This pause, he said, provides an opportunity for negotiations, but he warned that if a deal is not reached by then, Israel will proceed with the offensive.
“From the moment the maneuver begins, we will act with great force and will not stop until all objectives are achieved, including the voluntary emigration plan for the residents of Gaza,” Katz said.
The Israeli cabinet has already approved the plan, which involves mobilizing tens of thousands of soldiers to Gaza and holding any territory captured, rather than withdrawing after targeted raids as in previous operations. The plan also includes the displacement of large numbers of Palestinian civilians to southern Gaza and the use of private firms to control humanitarian aid distribution, moves that have drawn international concern and condemnation.
Israeli officials say the expanded operation aims to destroy Hamas’s military and governmental capabilities and to prevent the group from regaining control or smuggling weapons. The IDF will establish a buffer zone inside Gaza to protect Israeli communities and maintain a military presence for an indefinite period.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with widespread hunger and shortages as aid deliveries have been severely restricted. The Israeli military currently controls about half the territory, and the planned escalation signals a new phase in the conflict, with potentially far-reaching consequences for both sides.
