Mrs. Olorunwa Sanni, mother of Omobewaji—one of the WASSCE candidates from Seico Secondary School who was killed by a truck driver in Ijebu Ode, during an interview with The Punch correspondent, spoke about the pain of losing her 16-year-old daughter, who had a three-month-old child.
She said she was 51 years old and a native of Ijebu Ode, working in cap designing.
While she was talking regarding the circumstances that led to her daughter’s death, she explained that her 16-year-old daughter, Omobewaji Sanni, who was taking the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination at Seico Secondary School, Ikangba, Ijebu Ode, was knocked down by a truck driver.
Further speaking, she said that they had spent a lot of money on her daughter’s care, but she was not concerned about the cost because her only priority was to do everything possible to ensure Omobewaji survived the accident. She added that the hospital had referred them to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for better treatment, but before leaving, they were instructed to carry out an X-ray of her leg. It was while they were about to do the X-ray that Omobewaji gave up.
When asked how old Omobewaji was, she said that her daughter would have been 17 years old in September.
She added, “She was a student of Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu Ode, but we got to know that she was pregnant when she got to SS3 last year. She was already five months pregnant when we got to know because we had thought that she was just having malaria fever all along. So, she dropped out, but I said that because a child made a mistake should not be a hindrance to make further progress in life.”
She also stated that she decided to register her daughter as an external candidate for the WASSCE at Seico School so that she could still take the examination alongside her peers, even though she would have to do so at a different school. She added that, as fate would have it, her daughter gave birth to a baby boy on February 2nd, which was three months prior.
