Former Nigerian Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has ignited a fresh political firestorm with his audacious proposal to overhaul Nigeria’s Constitution, shifting from “indigeneship” to “citizenship.” The statement, made during a recent interview, has drawn both intrigue and ridicule, with Lere Olayinka, an aide to Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike on Sunday, August 10, 2025, leading the charge against it.
Amaechi, a prominent figure in ADC coalition, declared, “I tell people I am not a Rivers man but a Nigerian. If I become President, that’s the first thing I will do; to change the Constitution from Indigeneship to Citizenship, so that wherever you are, you are a citizen of that place.” He further suggested this transformation could occur within a month, a timeline that has raised eyebrows given the rigorous amendment process outlined in Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution, requiring approval from both the Senate and House of Representatives, followed by presidential assent.
Olayinka, known for his sharp political commentary, dismissed the proposal as a desperate ploy. In a scathing X post, he quipped, “Las las, out of desperation, Hungryman Rotimi Amaechi don play penalty enter throw-in.” He added, “And e get where person go go study Law, him go dey thing say President of Nigeria has powers to change the Constitution of the country within one month. Awon set of BASELESS LAWYERS.”
