According to a report from Daily Post Nigeria on Wednesday, February 19, Chuks Ibegbu, a prominent figure in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has shed light on the significant support that Peter Obi received from voters in the Yoruba and Hausa communities during the 2023 presidential elections. Ibegbu attributes this unprecedented backing to a collective desire for a better Nigeria, transcending ethnic affiliations.
Ibegbu stated, “Many Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani voters were driven by the hope for change. They recognized that Obi represented a vision for unity and progress that resonated across tribal lines.” He emphasized that this cross-ethnic support reflects a growing awareness among Nigerians about the need for inclusive leadership, which prioritizes national interests over tribal sentiments.
The Ohanaeze chieftain criticized the notion that the election was solely a tribal contest, arguing that the real issue at stake was the quest for political equity. “The narrative that positions leadership as a battle between ethnic groups is outdated. Voters are increasingly focused on competence and the ability to deliver results,” he remarked.
Ibegbu also pointed out that political disillusionment among the electorate fueled Obi’s appeal. “People are tired of the status quo. The economic hardships and governance failures have made them seek alternatives, and Obi emerged as a credible option,” he noted.
He further highlighted the role of grassroots mobilization in Obi’s campaign, stating, “His message resonated with ordinary citizens who yearned for a leader who understands their struggles. This connection was pivotal in garnering votes beyond traditional party lines.”
Ibegbu asserted that the overwhelming support for Peter Obi from the Yoruba and Hausa communities signifies a shift in Nigerian politics. “It’s a call for all political parties to recognize that effective leadership must embrace unity and inclusivity, moving away from divisive narratives,” he concluded.
