Dele Momodu has said that you do not need to be a billionaire to win a presidential election in Nigeria. He pointed out that many past presidents, like Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan, came from ordinary backgrounds and still won the country’s highest office.
In his interview on News Central TV, he explained that elections are usually paid for by “investors” who believe a candidate has a good chance of winning. He said that if a single person can pay for a whole presidential campaign by themselves, then people should ask where all that money came from.
According to Dele Momodu, he said, “It is very funny that old people can forget so soon that OBJ came from prison to become president. It’s one of the miracles of the 20th century. Musa Yar’Adua was a lecturer, he had no money. Goodluck Jonathan, from a village, was a lecturer. Buhari was supposed to be the most popular candidate ever, who had no money. So where does money come into this? If an individual can fund a presidential campaign, then every right-thinking person should ask where that money is coming from. So I wanted to settle that with you, that there is no country where the only prerequisite is for you to be a billionaire.”
