Human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has endorsed Peter Obi’s proposal for a single-term presidency, arguing that Nigeria’s past leaders squandered extended tenures without delivering substantial progress.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on August 11, 2025, reported by Daily Post, Farotimi stated, “(Olusegun) Obasanjo had eight years; what did he do with it? (Muhammadu) Buhari had eight years; what did he do with it? He ruined Nigeria. (President Bola) Tinubu has had two years, and he is taking us back 50 years.”

Farotimi, a vocal advocate for justice and systemic reform, emphasized that a leader’s impact hinges on the quality of their actions, not the length of their tenure. He noted that Olusegun Obasanjo served as president from May 1999 to May 2007, and Muhammadu Buhari from May 2015 to May 2023, before handing over to Tinubu.

Recalling Obi’s single-term presidency concept from the election period, Farotimi argued that effective governance depends on a leader’s plans and execution, not prolonged time in office. He asserted that, if he were president, two years would suffice to achieve his goals, underscoring that lasting change stems from purposeful action.

Farotimi’s support for Obi’s vision highlights a broader call for efficient leadership and accountability, resonating with Nigerians frustrated by decades of underperformance, as the 2027 election debates intensify around governance reforms and impactful leadership.
