Kenneth Okonkwo, former spokesperson for Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, shared his perspective on the political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general election. He described as unrealistic the notion of fielding Obi, a southeastern candidate without control over the military, in a bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu, who hails from the southwest. According to Okonkwo, banking on northern support under such circumstances reflects a misreading of Nigeria’s political structure.
Expanding on his view, Okonkwo emphasized that Peter Obi lacks the level of political influence that Tinubu commands, particularly when it comes to securing electoral victory. He suggested that Obi’s position within the national political landscape remains limited compared to the entrenched networks and leverage wielded by the current president.
According to him, “Why would you take somebody from the southeast, who does not have the army, who does not have the navy, who does not have the air force, to go and confront somebody from the southwest, and you think the North will back you — a fresh candidate that they do not even believe may keep to the terms of the agreement. Like I said, I will not swear for any politician.
