Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has criticized politicians who make public commitments to serve only one presidential term if elected, describing such promises as both unconvincing and constitutionally problematic.
Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television, El-Rufai addressed the trend of political candidates pledging to limit their time in office as a campaign strategy.
“Now, on the question of people coming out and saying, ‘I will do one term’—I don’t think anyone believes that. I don’t think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours,” El-Rufai stated.
Drawing from his experience as a two-term governor, El-Rufai argued that meaningful governmental change requires more than a single four-year term, citing fellow former governors to support his position.
“And frankly, as someone that has been governor for eight years, and Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful changes in government. Four years is not enough,” he explained.
The former governor issued a direct appeal to politicians to abandon what he characterized as an empty campaign promises about term limits.
“So I want to appeal to everyone to stop making these commitments of ‘I will do four years’ or ‘I’ll do eight years’ because nobody believes you. You will go in there and change the story. Okay,” he declared.
El-Rufai suggested that such pledges are inherently unreliable, predicting that politicians would abandon these commitments once in office regardless of their initial intentions.
Rather than focusing on term-limit promises, El-Rufai called for a more strategic approach to political planning, emphasizing the need for party unity and electoral strategy.
“Let us wait for our party to settle, and we have a discussion and decide what is the way to win because that’s the starting point,” he advised.
