Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has cast doubt on the widely held perception of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, as a man of modesty and integrity. In a recent interview with Noble Nigeria, Sowore accused Obi of carefully curating a humble public image that, according to him, does not reflect reality.

Sowore, who has long distanced himself from being a supporter of the former Anambra State governor, shared a personal encounter during the 2023 presidential campaign period to illustrate his claims. He described seeing Obi at an airport where the Labour Party candidate had arrived on a commercial flight — a move many perceived as a demonstration of humility and alignment with the average Nigerian.

However, Sowore claims what happened next revealed a stark contrast.

“I saw him entering a vehicle and I followed,” he recounted. “It turns out he was going to the private section where VIPs are treated. I asked the guy who was driving — we were in a Hilux van — and I said, ‘Let’s wait and see what Peter Obi drives.’ I was actually expecting to see one of those Innoson motors.”

To his surprise, Sowore said Obi was instead received by a convoy of luxury vehicles.

“Peter Obi had nothing less than ten big Toyota SUVs waiting for him. There was also a Mercedes space bus. And I was telling myself, ‘Why do you have to lie or cover up?’ Nobody is going to be upset with you that you are a presidential candidate with a convoy,” he added.

The comments have sparked debate on social media, with supporters and critics of both politicians weighing in on the contrast between public appearances and private conduct among Nigeria’s political elite.

While Peter Obi has not responded to the claims as of the time of this report, his image as a frugal and principled leader has been a cornerstone of his political identity — one that helped propel his popularity, particularly among young voters during the 2023 elections.

Sowore’s remarks have reignited discussions about authenticity in politics and the growing demand among Nigerians for leaders who reflect their values not only in speech, but in conduct.
