Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, said that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has submitted his idea for a single-term presidency to the opposition coalition for review.

Tanko shared this news during a ceremony where Obi was honoured with the traditional title of ‘Sarki Maskan’ (meaning War Hero) by the Pantami community in Gombe State.

Obi also received a letter of praise for his service to the community and was given another traditional title, ‘Dan Maje Babba Pantanmi’, along with a commendation letter signed by the District Head of Pantami Palace, Mai Martaba Abdullahi.

According to The Vanguard, while reacting to the development, the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) said the North might support Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election because they don’t have many good options.

The MBF National President, Dr. Bitrus Pogu, explained that Obi’s promise to serve only one term—and his history of keeping promises—could make him a good choice.

He added that the North might have to back a trustworthy candidate from the South since putting forward a Northern candidate might not work. According to him, they could also consider former President Goodluck Jonathan, if he is allowed to run, since the law would only permit him to serve one term too.

Further talking, Dr. Pogu said, “I want to say that a drowning person wouldn’t mind even holding onto a straw thinking that it will save him. So, in the situation which the North finds itself in, I do not think that their choices are many. Getting a Northerner to contest is a problem and they must have to trust somebody that has a track record of consistency which Peter Obi seems to have.”
