According to a report by The Sun on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Peter Obi, the Labour Party leader and 2023 Presidential candidate, has criticized the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for applying a perceived double standard in responding to democratic disruptions.

Obi’s comments, shared on his X handle, stem from the recent reported coup situation in Guinea-Bissau, which coincident-ally entangled former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was there as an election monitor.

Obi expressed relief after confirming Dr. Jonathan’s safety and safe return to Nigeria following the unusual incident, where the President of Guinea-Bissau himself announced the coup just before the formal announcement of election results.

Obi argues that ECOWAS was quick to condemn and sanction Guinea-Bissau over the “coup glitch,” yet it remained silent on the “technical glitch” that allegedly marred the 2023 Nigerian election—a glitch whose nature, he notes, has never been clearly explained.

He contends that all “glitches,” whether military or technological, undermine democracy by denying citizens their mandate.

Obi emphasizes that a coup visible with guns and a subversion carried out through a designed technological failure are two faces of the same crisis, both obstructing the people’s right to freely elect their leaders.

For democracy to genuinely flourish, Obi insists, it requires environments of transparency and accountability, where the voice of the people is paramount and respected.

He challenges ECOWAS to define a punishment for countries that announce “glitches” at critical electoral moments, urging a constructive approach to address these issues for a stable and democratic West Africa. View, More,
