In a recent interview shared by Channels Television from 8:19, Kenneth Okonkwo, a columnist and public affairs analyst, dismissed the Labour Party as having no future in the 2027 general elections.
When asked whether the Labour Party could still play a significant role, Okonkwo firmly declared that the party no longer has the necessary structures to survive. According to him, effective political participation requires strong grassroots organization, which Labour currently lacks.
“I am ruling out the Labour Party and whoever decides to run under Labour Party in the next election. Take my words for it. Why? Because it’s not existing. Where are the structures? No ward executives, no unit executives, no state executives. Now there’s no national executive. And you think you can do wonders and you alone, you are the only politician. The name is being thrown around in politics,” he said.
Okonkwo further explained that democracy cannot be built around a single individual, no matter how popular. In his words, “A tree does not make a forest and in Nigeria any one tree that is leading any political party, that forest is dead because even if you win they will take it away from you.”
He stressed that without clear leadership, structures, and unity, the Labour Party will remain only a name on paper with no real electoral value in 2027.
