The former President Olusegun Obasanjo unveiled the behind-the-scenes drama that led to his surprise appearance at the 65th birthday of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, in a speech that highlighted the power of an apology.
Obasanjo, speaking in a video from Symfoni TV from 06:25, detailed how Fayose initially sent an emissary, Foluso, to “feel the pulse” of the event after past disagreements him.
The former president revealed he had a prior commitment in Kigali but was so moved by Fayose’s personal appeal that he rearranged his schedule. “When you then told me that your birthday is this Saturday, whatever it takes, I will make sure that I come,” Obasanjo told the birthday gathering.
However, the key to reconciliation came through a phone call. Obasanjo stated he told Fayose’s wife, “Madam, you and your husband are not responsible children.”
This direct rebuke was met with immediate and disarming humility. “Your wife completely disarmed me by saying, ‘Baba, you are right, please forgive us,’” Obasanjo shared.
