Dr. Oluranti Afowowe, a political scholar from the Department of History and International Studies, Osogbo, revealed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo narrowly escaped an attempt on his life while in prison.
While speaking in a recent podcast with Edmund Obilo, Afowowe explained that Obasanjo was targeted to be injected with poison but managed to avoid it after being warned in advance.
He revealed that assassination attempts in Nigeria’s political and military history often went beyond the use of armed security, as secret method like injecting poisoned tea was employed to eliminate opponents.
He pointed out that both MKO Abiola and General Sani Abacha fell victim to such method, despite being aware of it.
He further disclosed that General Shehu Yar’Adua died after being injected in prison, while human rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi was also marked for injection but managed to escape the plot.
In his words, “There are specially designed cups, teacups, that serve one and when you get to the one you want to kill, there’s a place where you press when you want to serve, there’s something you press that will release the tea. There’s a way you press it that will eject poison.”
“Abacha should know but you see, there’s a way that when time has come, one will just fall victim. How about Abiola? Abiola too knew about all these things and yet he was a victim.”
“Look, there were efforts to kill Obasanjo too in prison. He escaped. We knew how Yar’Adua died, how he was injected. Obasanjo was going to be injected, and he had been advised not to take it.”
“And Gani Fawehinmi was to be injected. He escaped. I mean, several examples. There would be information.”
