Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a unique leader who understood governance and made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV today, Okorocha reflected on Obasanjo’s legacy as he marked his 80th birthday.
“Obasanjo was such a unique man who knows what he wants and how to get it. There is no doubt about his personality. As a president, he did well. Give it to him, he knows how to choose those who work with him,” Okorocha said.
He highlighted Obasanjo’s ability to identify and appoint competent individuals, even when personal sentiments were involved.
“He knows how to pick the best. In fact, Obasanjo can pick someone he doesn’t even like once he can do the job, just to take the credit,” he added.
Okorocha praised the former president’s role in modernizing Nigeria’s economy, particularly through the introduction of telecommunications and digital advancements.
“He did very well as a president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, bringing telecommunications, the computers, and trying to leapfrog into the new world economy at that time,” Okorocha stated.
Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s president from 1999 to 2007, oversaw key economic reforms and played a crucial role in stabilizing the country’s democratic process.
His administration was instrumental in expanding mobile phone networks and improving Nigeria’s global economic positioning.
As Obasanjo celebrates his 80th birthday, tributes continue to pour in, recognizing his influence on Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
Okorocha’s remarks add to the commendations from leaders who acknowledge the former president’s contributions to national development.
