Political tensions in Rivers State have intensified following Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, as local leaders and observers continue to assess the implications for governance in the oil-rich state. In a recent interview from 14:03 on News Central TV, Maobuye Nangi Obu, Secretary General of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, weighed in on the ongoing conflict between the governor and lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
Obu accused key federal actors of playing a direct role in destabilizing the state, particularly through the legislative arm. He said, “Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, is still using Martins Amaewhule to cause chaos in Rivers State.” Obu argued that this interference has created unnecessary political tension and undermined the effectiveness of the state government. He noted that while the governor has made efforts to stabilize governance, external pressures continue to complicate his administration’s ability to deliver on development and public welfare.
Speaking further, Obu emphasized that the focus of government should remain on addressing the needs of Rivers residents, including improving public infrastructure, education, and employment opportunities. He criticized what he described as partisan politics being prioritized over the well-being of citizens, noting that such conflicts erode public trust and stall progress.
Obu also addressed the governor’s recent defection, explaining that while the move may have been politically strategic, it should not distract from the primary goal of effective governance. He urged both state and federal actors to prioritize cooperation over confrontation to ensure stability and prosperity in Rivers State.
He concluded that true leadership requires commitment to the people rather than the manipulation of political structures, and that resolving these disputes is essential to allow Rivers State to focus on development and the welfare of its citizens. View, More,
