Dr. Effiong Nyong, a former governorship candidate in Cross River State under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised serious concerns over the political influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in Rivers State.
According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Nyong stressed that Wike should not be allowed to operate without checks and balances, warning that his actions have the potential to undermine the state’s political system. He noted that Wike has been acting with excessive freedom, allegedly enjoying the support of the President, which has contributed to a situation where the political party structure in Rivers State is compromised.
He further explained that the entire party system in Rivers has been largely usurped, with decision-making increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few individuals. This, he said, has created an environment marked by high-level impunity, where political processes and democratic norms are ignored. Nyong emphasized that such unchecked influence could have far-reaching consequences for governance and political fairness in the state.
The former governorship aspirant argued that no political leader, regardless of position or popularity, should operate above established rules and institutional frameworks. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy political system where power is exercised responsibly, and public officials are held accountable. By allowing any individual to dominate the political landscape without oversight, Nyong warned, Rivers State risks weakening its democratic institutions and marginalizing other political actors and stakeholders.
He said: “Nyesom Wike cannot and should not be allowed to do as he likes in Rivers, which unfortunately he had been doing with the alleged backing of the President.” Explore , More , News>>>
