Former Political Editor of THISDAY Newspaper, Ike Abonyi has decried what he described as the relentless attacks on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi in Nigeria’s media and political space.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News from 10:36, Abonyi argued that since Obi emerged as a major political force at the national level, no other politician has endured the level of abuse he has faced.
“Anybody that has been following Peter Obi since he became a national figure at the presidential level will know that, nobody has been so abused in the media space like him,” Abonyi said.
He alleged that some of these attacks have been orchestrated and targeted, singling out social commentator Reno Omokri as one of those engaged to discredit Obi. “Somebody like Reno Omokri was hired just to attack him,” Abonyi claimed.
The veteran journalist maintained that such constant media vilification is part of a broader strategy to weaken Obi’s political influence and distract from his message of accountability, prudence and good governance.
He noted that despite the barrage of criticisms, Obi has remained focused on issue-based politics and continues to command significant support across the country.
Abonyi warned that sustained personal attacks on political leaders risk lowering the quality of Nigeria’s democratic discourse. He stressed that political debates should focus on policies and solutions to national challenges rather than character assassination.
He further noted that Obi’s resilience in the face of such hostility has continued to strengthen his appeal, particularly among young Nigerians who see him as a symbol of integrity and hope for a different style of leadership.
