Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed that the local government election scheduled for October 5, 2024, will proceed as planned, with no legal hindrance to delay or cancel it. The governor called on political parties, candidates, and the electorate to fully prepare for the election, which is set to elect new council chairmen.
Governor Fubara made this known during a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) complex, where he met with the Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, and other principal staff members. He confirmed that RSIEC had obtained an order mandating the conduct of the election, with security agencies expected to provide the necessary support. “The election will be one of the best ever conducted in the state, free and fair,” Fubara assured.
The governor also warned against any attempts to disrupt the commission’s activities, cautioning those involved to desist immediately. He emphasized that the RSIEC is an institution of the state, stressing his administration’s commitment to a transparent and credible electoral process.
According to THE NATION reports, Fubara said, “Nobody has a right to come here. This is Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. It belongs to Rivers State, and I am the Governor. So, if there is anything, let me know, I will come here myself.”
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara inspected the ongoing 12.5km Trans-Kalabari Road project, valued at N225.1 billion. Speaking during the inspection, he expressed some dissatisfaction with the pace of the work but acknowledged the difficult terrain. Despite the challenges, he urged the contractors to accelerate the project, emphasizing its importance as one of his administration’s legacy achievements.
The Trans-Kalabari Road, which starts at Rumuolumeni and will connect Tombia to the city, is seen as a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region. Governor Fubara reiterated his determination to see the project completed before the end of his tenure.
