A Nigerian Lawyer, Kenneth Okonkwo analysing the issue of insecurity in the Southeast region of Nigeria has criticized the narrative that blames the people of the Southeast for the insecurity, He pointed out that no one from the region has held the presidency or vice presidency since 1999.
He argued that this lack of representation does not correlate with the security challenges faced in the area. He urged the government to enhance security measures not only in the Southeast but across the entire country. He also advocated for increased investment in modern technology to enhance security in the country.
He said in an interview with Symfoni from 20:29, ”They are saying that the insecurity in the Southeast is caused by the people of the Southeast. Nobody from the Southeast had become president or vice president since 1999, so how could it have caused the insecurity in the Southeast? It is not the worst in Nigeria, so the issue here is that the government should step up its security not just in the Southeast but all over Nigeria and take away the causes of the insecurity.
And, of course, you cannot rule out the fact that poverty is part of what is creating insecurity. As human beings, we must survive. So, the government should improve the socio-economic welfare of Nigerians and they should make more investment in modern technology of fighting.”
