In a detailed interview on News Central TV, African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader Dele Momodu defended his political consistency while challenging what he described as hypocritical attitudes toward presidential tenure and regional politics.
Momodu provided a historical overview of recent Nigerian presidencies to support his argument. “We’ve had Obasanjo, a southerner, for 8 years. We have—we had Yar’Adua—unfortunately he died 3 years, you know, into his government. Then we had Jonathan who did 5 years and was given another opportunity for another four years—he would have done—it would have been an unprecedented 9 years,” he recounted.
The ADC chieftain noted the absence of opposition to Jonathan’s extended tenure. “Nobody fought at that time that Jonathan should not complete what Yar’Adua started. Nobody,” he observed, highlighting what he sees as inconsistent political attitudes.
Momodu distanced himself from what he characterized as double standards. “So this hypocrisy that—I’m not part of it,” he declared firmly.
The political veteran clarified his position on regional representation in leadership. “I would love for a southerner—I would love for a southerner to be president if he is competent. I don’t mind,” he stated, emphasizing merit over geography.
However, Momodu expressed disagreement with purely geographic qualifications. “But in a situation where the automatic qualification is where you come from, some of us disagree with it,” he explained.
Reiterating his limited political influence, the ADC leader emphasized his commitment to vocal opposition. “And as I said, I have only one vote. I do not have any power, but I have my mouth to say—when everybody kept quiet, I was saying my own,” he stated.
Momodu acknowledged potential backlash while maintaining his resolve. “They can abuse us. They can do whatever they like, but I will continue. I’ve always said my own. There has never been a time that I did not talk when I saw that things were going wrong,” he concluded.
