Former Nigerian senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani has weighed in on the complexities of political trust in the country, stating that no Nigerian president would ever fully embrace or trust a person who openly celebrated the demise of a fellow leader.

Sani, known for his outspoken views on national issues, made this assertion through his official X (formerly called Twitter) account.

He argued that a leader who publicly rejoiced over the passing of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua would struggle to earn the confidence of any future president.

“Neither in the present nor in the nearest future; no Nigerian president in his right senses will ever closely embrace or trust a man who repeatedly celebrated and gloated about sending President Yar’Adua to his grave,” Sani wrote.

The former senator’s remarks appear to highlight the lingering impact of past political betrayals in Nigeria, where alliances are often tested by personal and ideological conflicts.

Yar’Adua, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2007 until his death in 2010, was widely regarded as a leader committed to national unity.

His tenure, however, was marked by health challenges that eventually led to his passing, sparking intense political maneuvering at the time.

Sani further emphasized the difficulty of trusting someone who could turn against their own kin, suggesting that such actions raise questions about loyalty in governance.

“It’s a case of ‘if you can do this and say this about your own brother, what about me?’” he stated.

His statement also alluded to a broader principle of caution in leadership, where past actions serve as indicators of future behavior.

Comparing the situation to an act of betrayal, Sani remarked, “No one will ever admit a man into his house who came with a sword stained with the blood of his brother.
