According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, October 20, 2025, former senator and rights activist, Shehu Sani, has defended Omoyele Sowore for fleeing the scene of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja when security operatives allegedly fired gunshots and tear gas.
The protest, which was organized to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, turned chaotic after reports of security clampdown.
Sowore, one of the key organizers, was seen in a viral video running away from the scene along with other protesters.
Following the incident, several critics mocked the human rights activist, describing his reaction as an act of fear and weakness.
Some said a true activist should have stood firm despite the threat of force.
However, Shehu Sani countered the criticism, saying Sowore’s action was a sensible decision in the face of danger.
He explained that running away from live gunfire or tear gas does not make one a coward but shows wisdom and the will to survive to continue the struggle another day.
Sani added that it would have been unwise for Sowore or any protester to confront armed security agents in such a tense situation.
According to him, the act of retreating during a violent confrontation should be seen as self-preservation and not fear.
“Running away during protest is not an act of cowardice. It’s a strategy to dodge the bullet or the tear gas in order to fight another day.
Facing an armed Police man on the 20th day of the month after his last salary requires some form of caution. Comrade Sowore is bravely wise,” he said. See, More, Here>>>
