Human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara has explained the professional boundaries that lawyers maintain with their clients, particularly in complex and high-profile cases. Speaking on Symfoni TV from 19:48, Opara highlighted how lawyers often advise clients when a conflict or ethical concern arises.
He noted, “Most of the time, we tell our clients, ‘Please go and look for another lawyer.’” Opara explained that this is a standard practice to ensure that legal representation remains ethical and effective, especially when a client’s instructions may conflict with professional obligations or the lawyer’s ability to provide proper guidance.
Opara reflected on the challenges encountered during Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, emphasizing that at times, decisions made by clients may require lawyers to step back or recommend alternative representation. He stressed that such advice is not a sign of abandonment but rather a measure to preserve the integrity of the legal process.
The lawyer also highlighted procedural irregularities in Kanu’s case, including the denial of the right to file a final written address and the foreclosure of his defense, which further complicated legal strategy.
