The Right Reverend Dr. Ikechukwu Egbuonu, Bishop of the Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, has given a detailed account of his recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where the IPOB leader is currently being held. Speaking to AIT News on Friday from 2:06, November 28, 2025, the bishop relayed Kanu’s reactions to the terrorism charges for which he was sentenced and the concerns he raised regarding the judicial process.
According to Bishop Egbuonu, Kanu firmly rejected several of the allegations, insisting that some of the offences he was convicted for were allegedly committed during the period he was held under the tight supervision of the Department of State Services (DSS).
“He was asking me, how could I have done all these in the custody of DSS?” the bishop said, noting that Kanu highlighted what he described as “illegalities” in the charges and sentencing.
Bishop Egbuonu stated that Kanu maintained the judgment was unjust and expressed confidence that the appellate courts would eventually correct it. He reportedly emphasized that some accusations were impossible to carry out from inside the DSS facility, where he had been detained for an extended period.
The bishop further explained that Kanu raised issues about the legal grounds of the trial itself. He said Kanu questioned the jurisdiction of the court on three main points: his extraordinary rendition from Kenya, the alleged use of a terrorism law that he claimed had been repealed, and the claim that certain alleged actions occurred while he was outside Nigeria. Kanu insisted these factors undermined the legitimacy of the process.
Despite these concerns, the bishop described Kanu as composed and mentally stable, adding that he remained focused on pursuing his appeal and clearing what he regards as serious procedural and legal flaws in his case.
According to Bishop Egbuonu, the central point Kanu wanted to make was simple and emphatic: that some of the acts for which he was convicted could not have been carried out by him, given that he was already in DSS detention at the time. View, More,
