According to a report by The Cable on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State and former minister of transportation, has declared his intention to contest for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His announcement was made on Wednesday in Kano while addressing journalists, Amaechi, who has previously vied for the presidency, said he would not step down for any aspirant as he believes he is fully prepared for the contest.
Amaechi explained that he has gathered enough experience from his years in politics and government service, which he believes gives him an advantage over other hopefuls.
He stressed that his decision to join the ADC presidential race was borne out of his conviction that he remains a strong candidate with the capacity to lead the country effectively.
The former governor also dismissed speculations that his political strength in Rivers State had been reduced following the emergence of Nyesom Wike, the former governor of the state and current minister of the federal capital territory.
Amaechi insisted that his political relevance is still intact and not affected by Wike’s rising influence.
Speaking further, Amaechi emphasized that Nigerians are dissatisfied with the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
He noted that the country is facing difficult times, and many citizens are unhappy with the situation across different states, including Rivers and other parts of the south.
The former minister said that his candidacy would provide Nigerians with an alternative platform through which their voices could be heard.
He maintained that the ADC remains a party that is open to all Nigerians who are eager for change and a new approach to governance.
Amaechi also pointed out that his years in office, both as governor and as minister, have prepared him with practical knowledge of leadership.
According to him, he understands the challenges the nation is facing and has ideas on how to improve the system.
His declaration marks a significant moment in the build-up to the party primaries, as Amaechi joins other aspirants seeking the ADC ticket ahead of the general elections.
His presence in the race is expected to draw attention due to his political background and his role in national politics over the years.
He said: “Nigerians are tired because no one is happy under Tinubu, not even in Rivers or across the south. People are suffering everywhere.
