General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Chief of Defense Staff has sounded a grave warning about the escalating instability in the Sahel region, cautioning that Nigeria could face significant security threats if neighboring nations Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso collapse under mounting pressures.

His remarks were shared in a video clip released by TV Platinum, showing the growing strategic risk to Nigeria.

“The Sahel is hot. Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso are going through so much stress,” Gen. Musa stated. “If we leave them the way they are going, in the next 6 to 1 year, those countries, I’m afraid, might collapse. And once they do, Nigeria is the target.”

With tensions rising across the Sahel, Gen. Musa stressed that regional cooperation and urgent intervention are essential to prevent a domino effect of instability that could engulf West Africa. His warning reflects deep concern over the region’s increasingly fragile state.

Security analysts concur that a collapse in any of the Sahel nations could trigger a surge in extremist activity, arms trafficking, and cross-border violence. These threats, fueled by weak governance, widespread poverty and ethnic disputes may easily spill into northern Nigeria, compromising national security.

In his address, Gen. Musa reaffirmed the Nigerian military’s commitment to preparing for such contingencies. He noted that troops are enhancing surveillance and bolstering border defenses to counter any potential influx of militants or destabilizing elements. However, he cautioned that military vigilance alone would not suffice.

“If we leave them the way they are going, those countries might collapse. And once they do, Nigeria is the target.”

General Musa’s warning serves as a sobering reminder of the interconnected nature of regional security. He urged political leaders, international partners and local communities to support a coordinated response to Sahel instability. This, he emphasized, would involve more than military support, it should also include development initiatives, humanitarian aid and intelligence sharing.

With the future of the Sahel hanging in the balance, Gen. Musa’s message is clear, the fate of Nigeria and the stability of West Africa depend heavily on swift, collective action to stabilize the region.
