According to a report by Times of Israel, on August 5, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is transforming Israel into “a leper state,” according to former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who has harshly criticised Israel’s status in the US, calling it “has never been so bad.”

The comments were made by Bennett in a long tweet that he sent after his recent US tour. In a statement stating that Israel “has lost Democratic support” and “the Republican Party, whose support for Israel could once be counted on is also being lost,” Bennett denounced the loss of bipartisan support.

Although he did concede that “some of the Trump administration still sympathises with Israel, primarily thanks to President Trump himself,” he also pointed out that many on the American right, including the MAGA movement, are turning their backs on Israel.

The “starvation” campaign in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, and according to Bennett, “it is almost a fact” for the majority of Americans and influential figures — Israel is perceived as more of a burden and liability on the US and its citizens.

Increasing antisemitism in the US, he said, has led extremists on the political left and right to pin the blame on Jews.

By stating that the present Israeli administration is causing “terrible damage” and “still does not understand the magnitude of the disaster,” Bennett severely criticised the Israeli government.

Noting that certain individuals “received a salary from Qatar,” he singled out the Prime Minister’s Office as the source of the office’s public diplomacy failures.

Moreover, he slammed ministers like Amichai Eliyahu, Amichai Chikli, and Bezalel Smotrich for their divisive remarks, saying, “they babble on and cause us unimaginable damage with devastating quotes that will haunt our soldiers in line for passports in countries around the world.”

Bennett asked, “Are you seriously under the impression that your interviews in Israel aren’t being heard outside of Israel?” Your actions will result in the prosecution of our troops; don’t you worry about that?”

He came to the conclusion that Israel’s situation would be “incredible” if Netanyahu’s propaganda machine had even a quarter of its domestic effort directed at Israeli foes abroad.
