In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer and political activist, Dele Farotimi, has reacted to recent comments made by Vice President Kashim Shettima on suspension of elected officials amid political crisis in Rivers State.
Shettima referred to a similar experience during the Jonathan administration, where he claimed he was nearly suspended as governor of Borno State due to insecurity.
According to him, his removal was stopped by then-Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Attorney-General, who warned against breaching the constitution.
Farotimi, known for criticizing political inconsistency, questioned Shettima’s sudden focus on constitutional values.
He mocked the Vice President’s new position, suggesting that Shettima was now acting like a legal expert.
Farotimi used the opportunity to criticize the emerging political coalition involving key leaders like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and others.
He referred to them as “Ndi Coalition Birikilas” in a sarcastic tone, implying that they were quickly embracing questionable figures for political gain.
He asked whether Shettima, after praising the coalition leaders, would now be included among them.
“Ndi Coalition Birikilas, now that Shettima has become a constitutional law expert, are you going to canonize him too? Would you be adding him to your coalition building blocks,” Farotimi wrote.
His statements were seen as both a critique of Shettima’s position on the Rivers matter and a swipe at the growing political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
