Spokesperson of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has dismissed allegations that the Senate acted outside the law in suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. He clarified that after thoroughly reviewing the court judgment cited by her supporters, the Senate found no section of the ruling that declared the suspension unconstitutional or illegal.
Adaramodu explained that the judgment did not order the Senate to reverse the suspension or reinstate Senator Natasha. Instead, he noted that the only order that was made in that judgment was the order that our colleague Senator Natasha should apologize to the court and pay ₦5 million fine—and she had appealed it. “The only order that was made in that judgment was the order that our colleague Senator Natasha should apologize to the court and pay ₦5 million fine and she had appealed it”, he said.
He questioned how an appeal against a court-imposed fine and directive could be interpreted as a legal basis for enforcing reinstatement, calling such a position an attempt to impose opinion over a clearly defined judgment.
The senator insisted that the National Assembly has the constitutional authority to regulate its internal affairs, including disciplinary actions involving its members. He maintained that unless the court issues a specific directive nullifying the suspension, the Senate’s decision stands.
Adaramodu made these comments during an interview on Channels Television, where he addressed the ongoing controversy and reaffirmed the Senate’s stance on the matter.
