Senate President Godswill Akpabio has withdrawn from a high-profile presidential panel investigating allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.
The development was revealed on Saturday, May 3, 2025, by Oby Ndukwe, President of Citizens Quest for Truth, during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television.
According to The Sun, the news has ignited widespread public discourse and raised fresh questions about the credibility and independence of the panel.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had inaugurated the probe panel on April 2, 2025, in response to mounting pressure surrounding the scandal.
The committee, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also includes National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and one nominee each from both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Although Akpabio has not officially commented on his withdrawal, sources close to the matter claim he raised concerns over perceived executive interference and questioned the impartiality of the panel.
His decision has intensified speculation about internal tensions within the ruling political structure.
The controversy stems from accusations made in February 2025 by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused Akpabio of sexually harassing her.
The Senate responded by suspending Akpoti-Uduaghan on March 6, 2025, pending the outcome of the investigation—a move that human rights advocates and opposition figures described as a strategy to silence her.
Despite her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan remains defiant, insisting she will present evidence in court to substantiate her claims.
The unfolding saga has placed Nigeria’s legislative leadership under unprecedented scrutiny, with civil society groups demanding transparency and justice.
As public pressure mounts, all eyes remain on the panel’s next steps and the legal path the embattled senator intends to pursue.
