Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has made an emotionally charged revelation during an interview with Arise News from 17:36, highlighting the growing support within the armed forces for his bold suggestion to fence Nigeria’s borders.
In the wide-ranging interview with Arise News, the Defence Chief explained his proposal to erect a security fence across Nigeria’s porous borders, pointing to escalating security threats from foreign insurgents and the flow of illegal arms into the country. According to Musa, much of the terror and banditry afflicting Nigeria is traceable to foreign fighter infiltration through unguarded border points in the Sahel region.
The idea, although seen by many as ambitious and expensive, appears to have found strong backing from within the military ranks.
General Musa said, “When I proposed fencing the borders, I thought people would laugh at me. But my soldiers down below called me and said, ‘Thank you, sir. If it means cutting our salary to do that, we want that as well.’”
The statement reflects both the desperation and determination of frontline troops battling complex and coordinated threats in multiple regions across the country.
Musa emphasized that border fencing would not only secure the nation but also reduce the burden on military personnel. He cited examples from other countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia who had successfully fenced long borders, urging that Nigeria must begin somewhere, even if one state at a time.
The Defence Chief’s remarks have sparked fresh debate on border security, with many now viewing his call as a critical intervention in the ongoing fight to restore peace and protect Nigeria’s sovereignty.
