Speaking in an interview with Mic On Podcast, Federal lawmaker representing Kogi State, Leke Abejide, has revealed that his earnings in the private sector far outweighed his pay as a member of the National Assembly, to the point where he nearly resigned after joining the legislature.

Speaking candidly about his transition into public service, Abejide recalled how, at the time he was elected, his net income from his private business ventures exceeded ₦100 million monthly. This, he said, created a stark contrast when he compared it with the official remuneration of lawmakers.

“When I came, I was thinking that people conspired against me to push me so that I lose, because as at the time I came into government, my net income in my office was already over ₦100 million a month. So when I came and I saw the bigger amount they were paying, I almost resigned. It was encouragement that made me to stay,” Abejide recounted.

The Kogi lawmaker explained that adjusting to the lower earnings in the legislature required a shift in mindset, noting that his decision to remain was motivated more by the opportunity to serve and make an impact than by financial considerations.
