According to a report by Daily Trust, a 35-year-old man, Nyali Hassan, has been arrested by the police for his involvement in multiple kidnappings across Kano and Kaduna States.
Hassan, a father of ten, confessed that he was drawn into the crime by his friends, who spent large amounts of money at social gatherings.
“I know that the Qur’an does not support crime, but I’ll say that my friends misled me. They would be spending so much money whenever we were at a gathering, so I decided to join them,” Hassan admitted during police interrogation.
The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force tracked and arrested Hassan in Stara Rago, Kano, following credible intelligence. At the time of his arrest, he was found with an AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines.
He later revealed that he was part of a six-man kidnapping gang operating in Makarfi, Bari, Yankin Rago, and Beli towns. His accomplices, identified as Kawuje, Moude, Babagida, Kabiru, and Umar, carried out kidnappings by ambushing victims on the road or invading their homes.
Hassan admitted to kidnapping eight people, though he successfully extorted ransom from only five victims, collecting between N1 million and N10 million. Some hostages managed to escape while their captors fell asleep.
However, he claimed they never killed any of their victims.
“We usually carry out our operations by laying ambush for victims on the road or visiting their homes,” Hassan stated.
He also disclosed that he used his share of the ransom to buy a pickup van and had inherited 20 cows from his late father.
