Esther Odartey-Wellington recounted how her friends at her boarding school, in a small act of profound kindness, conspired to shield her from the devastating news of her father’s murder. This moment of human empathy provides a stark contrast to the backdrop of national violence and chaos that was engulfing Ghana at the time.
On State Affairs, she explained that after she had heard the initial, misleading radio reports, her friends took it upon themselves to protect her from the full truth for as long as possible. Their quiet conspiracy of kindness was a testament to the strength of their friendship and their desire to protect her from a pain they knew would be unbearable.
She said, “My friends in the boarding house were very kind and sensitive, and I later, much later, found out that they had disabled the television in the common room, and perhaps the radio as well, so that I wouldn’t learn of my father’s demise. So some days later, I saw a car drive in front of the boarding house and I thought I recognized it. I was sitting with a friend who tried to dissuade me from going out, but I insisted and I ran after the car because I thought, ‘News from Daddy.’”
