Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Solomon Asemota has expressed frustration over citizenship policies that has prevented his Lagos-born daughter from claiming indigeneship status in the state.
During his address at Pa Adebanio’s posthumous birthday celebration, covered by Symfoni TV from 13:05, Asemota appealed to the Yoruba community: “So, I will plead with Yorubas. You got the simulation first, the Yoruba axis of Abeokuta Lagos and you had the advantage, even though the white people got to Calabar and Asaba. It was Yoruba here in Lagos that was established.”
The legal luminary specifically highlighted what he views as an unjust citizenship system: “My daughter was born in Lagos Island Maternity, but she’s not a Lagosian. Why? Is that progress? No, it isn’t; it’s not progress.”
He advocated for a more inclusive vision of Nigeria that embraces diversity and even regional expansion: “So, the Yorubas have to sit and understand that we are all human beings, and we are weak, and that the larger we are in Nigeria, the better for all of us. In fact, we should be thinking about how the Republic of Benin and so forth will join us, and be thinking of how the other people in the Niger Republic will join us.”
