The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has appealed to his colleagues to allow former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa (rtd), to address Nigerians during his ministerial screening as Minister of Defence. Akpabio made the call on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, during a heated session at the Senate Chamber, according to a report by Punch.
The session became tense when some senators insisted that Musa should not be questioned but should simply be allowed to “bow and go,” a practice sometimes reserved for senior or distinguished nominees. These lawmakers argued that his record of service was already well-known and that further questioning was unnecessary.
However, other senators strongly opposed this view, stressing that the former CDS should speak directly to Nigerians about his plans, especially given the worsening security situation across the country.
Intervening in the debate, Akpabio aligned with those calling for Musa to address the nation. He noted that millions of Nigerians were anxious to hear how the incoming Defence Minister intended to tackle insecurity, particularly the alarming rise in kidnappings involving schoolchildren.
Akpabio reminded the Senate of the national urgency, pointing out that over 200 children are still held captive in the bush. According to him, the suffering of these young victims makes it necessary for Musa to reassure Nigerians that renewed hope and decisive action are on the way.
In his words:
“Our constituents would like to hear from him. We are asking him questions because our constituents would like to ask him questions too,” Akpabio said.
“With over 200 children in the bush being tortured, give the man an opportunity to give Nigerians hope.” View, More,
